The feature-request board

If you want Beerwright to do something it does not do yet, ask for it here: /support, on the Feature requests tab. It is a public list, other brewers vote on it, and it is what we read when we decide what to build next.

The feature-request board: the Open section with its count, and two requests under it with their vote buttons and status badges. The feature-request board: the Open section with its count, and two requests under it with their vote buttons and status badges.

The board is in sections, so what we have decided does not sit in the middle of what we have not:

  • Planned comes first. It is the short answer to “what is coming”.
  • Open is next, and it is the one your vote changes. This is the list to read if you want to push for something.
  • Shipped and Declined are folded shut at the bottom. Open either to read it; the number beside the name tells you how much is in there.

Searching looks in every section, including the folded ones — if what you are about to ask for has already shipped, the search will open that section and show you.

Press Ask for something, write a title of 80 characters or fewer, and add a few lines of detail. The most useful detail is not the feature you have in mind — it is what you are trying to do and how the way you do it now gets in the way. We can often solve that a better way than the one you would have asked for.

Your request goes on the board the moment you press Post it. Nothing is approved first, and nothing is edited.

No request carries a name, not yours and not anybody’s. The board never shows who asked for something, there is no byline and no avatar, and that is true of your own requests as much as everyone else’s. What that costs you: there is no “my requests” list to come back to yet, and we cannot write back to you on the board. If you want an answer meant for you, start a conversation instead.

You need an account to post — signed out, you can read the board and nothing more.

Every request has a count and a button beside it. Press it to add your vote, press it again to take it back. One vote per account, and voting for your own request is fine.

Sort by Most wanted to see what the count says, or by Newest to see what has just arrived. Either way the sort applies inside each section rather than across the whole board. The search box matches titles, which is the fastest way to check whether somebody has already asked for the thing you are about to type — a second request for the same idea splits the votes between them.

We set a status on each request, and it is the whole of our answer:

Status What it means
Open We have read it. It is on the list and collecting votes.
Planned We are going to build it. No date, because we would only be guessing.
Shipped It is in the app.
Declined We are not going to build it.

Each status is its own section on the board, so a status is also where a request moves to.

We often leave a short note under the request as well, and a Declined almost always has one. A no with a reason is more use than a no, and the reason is usually that it fights something else the app has to be.

  • Ten open requests per account. Hitting the cap means we have ten of your ideas we have not answered yet; it clears as we set statuses on them.
  • Five requests an hour. You will not meet this one writing at a human pace.

Both refuse the post and tell you which one you met, and nothing you typed is lost.

Your requests stay, still with no name on them. Other brewers voted for those, and a public list is not yours to shorten on the way out.

Your votes go, and every request you voted for is recounted without you in the same moment, so no count is left overstating anybody.

There are no comments on a request. Votes are the signal, and a discussion is a conversation — if you have more to say about your idea than fits in the request, write to us and we will read it there.

  • Support, for a bug or an account problem rather than an idea.
  • What changed, for what has shipped since you asked.
  • The assistant, which is not the place to file one.
